There is nothing quite as elegant as the delicate and graceful bearing of an Afghan Hound. We begin this series of breed profiles with the aristocratic Afghan because we enjoy their regal bearing and playful, sometimes silly temperament. Two of our Lucky Dogs, Jackpot & Shakespeare are excellent examples of the breed.
These dogs are sighthounds, bred to hunt gazelle and hare in the mountains of Afghanistan, which grows very cold. Their long, silky fur provides protection from such harsh elements and has the added bonus of being stunningly beautiful. They are tall, generally 2-2½ feet in height, and come in a multitude of colorings.

Personality is in abundance with these amusing clowns, although they can maintain an aloof and stately manner when they are “on the job” hunting, or in the show ring. As they tend to live from 12-18 years, you will have a long time to enjoy your best friend if you choose to add an Afghan Hound to your family. Although sometimes sensitive to anesthesia or prone to allergies and cancer, as well as a condition called chylothorax; there is generally little to be concerned about with the health of this breed.

Afghans enjoy lots of exercise – so if you live an active lifestyle and are seeking a companion that can keep up with you – you should add this one to your list of breeds to consider. All of us here at LuckyDogs are avid proponents of rescuing our furry friends from shelters; so here is a handy list of shelters and rescue organizations in the State of Florida which are devoted to Afghans, to get you started in your search:
